A resource for the whole church from Luther Seminary, Two very different but influential figures in 20th century Christianity, Karl Barth and Billy Graham, both stated that the 20th century should be the century during which the Holy Spirit is brought to prominence.. No doubt the men were at least as much to blame. True, Paul urges that Corinthians to do everything decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40), but this requirement does not preclude a varied collection of activities. It was the official title of the Roman Emperor. What was written by the different inspired instruments is of God as absolutely as if He had written it all without them. Literally, we have to be the body of Christ, hands to do his work, feet to run upon his errands, a voice to speak for him. In so far as the early Church had a creed at all, that simple phrase was it. So it is for the beauty and good appearance of the church that there should be diversity of gifts and offices in it. 28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. "Put away from" not the table of the Lord merely, this he does not say, but "Put away from among yourselves." But this chapter brings vividly before them how all outward things pass away, even the fashion of this world. Though, &c. The apostle having observed in the last verse of the preceding chapter, (with which this chapter is closely connected,) that he would show them a more excellent way, that is, a way more wise, holy, and useful, than that of striving to excel each other in miraculous gifts, now proceeds to do this, directing them to pursue the divine grace of love to God and . Nothing happened. What the person said about Jesus Christ was especially important. It is utter opposition to the thoughts, feelings, judgments, and ways of men, religious or profane. God kept saying, "I am going to give you a son, Abraham," the older he got. They conceived that if Christianity did such great things when those who possessed it were poor and simple, what might it not do if it could only be backed by the ability, and the learning, and the philosophy of men! It is possible, also, and indeed probable, that the priests and priestesses of the pagan gods who pretended to be under the influence of inspiration might denounce the name of Jesus, because they would all be opposed to the purity of his religion. After all, if the Corinthians had coveted gifts, they had not coveted the best But even if we may desire the best gifts, there is better still; and the best of all is charity love. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. So in the second epistle to the Corinthians he begs them to forgive the wrong; for he would not accept anything from them. 1 Corinthians 13:3. Each is a member of the body, not the whole body; each stands related to the body as a part of it, and all have a common relation to one another, dependence upon one another, and should have a mutual care and concern. They were occupied with themselves, with one another, with the supernatural energy which grace had conferred on them in the name of the Lord. What would a man do without a heart, or liver, or lungs? 5 There are different kinds of service, but . The addition to this of the New Testament truth of the chance gives immense impressiveness to all, and a fresh force, because it keeps before the Christian the constant expectancy of Christ. He said, "You have no right speaking about my ministry. These criteria give us a place to start as we continue to look for what God is up to in our own churches and neighborhoods today. Even they were quite unprepared for so dreadful a conclusion. Their thoughts were fleshly, not of God. And on the other hand no man could say Jesus was the Lord (that is, live by this faith, and work miracles to prove it), but it must be by the Holy Ghost. They said, "Fair enough." Because it happens so naturally. It is the time, in the very love that God implants, to deal sternly with that which has disgraced the name of the Lord. This matter of tongues was causing a great deal of perplexity in the Church at Corinth. They had severed themselves from the power of service. For by one Spirit are we all baptized, c.]As the body of man, though composed of many members, is informed and influenced by one soul so the Church of Christ, which is his body, though composed of many members, is informed and influenced by one Spirit, the Holy Ghost; actuating and working by his spiritual body, as the human soul does in the body . But they were not distributed for the mere honour and advantage of those who had them, but for the benefit of the church, to edify the body, and spread and advance the gospel. God gives us a body as pleases Him, our new body. How? This is exceedingly important; for there is a disposition often to consider that difficulties and disorder among the saints of God are due to a want of government and of ministerial power. We are not even aware of it. Aristotle described it as "striving after the best ends and using the best means." It is in vain, therefore, to plead circumstances as an excuse for sin. The way it works in me is different than the way it works in you. Love is the only thing which can bind the Church into a perfect unity; and Paul goes on to sing his hymn to love. And surely the time will come, and they would all reign together when Christ reigns over the earth. No one can pretend that they did not need the spirit to recognize the lordship of Jesus or to develop their own particular gifts. Grace is so feebly known, that the first thought you will find amongst godly people is what they ought to be; but the ground and weapon of the apostle Paul is what they are by God's grace. Spirit as a uniting force Pauls answer begins with the spirit. From Paul's picture we see certain things which ought to exist in the Church, the body of Christ. Some would translate, as in ch. In those days many illnesses, often all illnesses, and especially mental illnesses, were attributed to the work of demons; and it was one of the functions of the Church to exorcise these demons. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Sadly, at the same time, they ignored the quieter work of the Spirit to draw them into a community that respects all its members. (iii) Paul speaks of helpers. The apostle contrasts two mighty powers that were contesting demons, on the one hand, a power stronger than man, struggling as to him here below; and, on the other hand, there was the Lord that had shed His blood for them, but the Lord of all who should judge quick and dead. Weigh from the prophecy of Isaiah the remarkable quotation "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. They both, therefore, (whatever their occasional oppositions, and whatever their permanent variety of form,) preferred the flesh, and were ignorant of God the one demanding signs, the other wisdom. This is the right choice because Jesus is Lord. "Here is a man of faith, but he had a lapse of faith. I am quite persuaded that the danger of the saints of God who have been brought outside the camp lies here, lest, delivered from what they know to be wrong, they may not seek in this an exercised conscience. They came from God, and were to be used for him. And this very difficulty as no doubt it would be to many a Christian now (that walking as men should be a reproach) was no doubt a clap of thunder to the proud but poor spirits at Corinth. If the Church is to be a healthy body, we need the work that everyone can do. To them the knowledge and worship of the true God were in a manner confined. Their supreme importance lies in this--the first gospel, Mark's, was not written until about A.D. 60, that is to say, not until about thirty years after the crucifixion of Jesus. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit." It is the knowledge which knows what to do in any given situation. Flesh is absolutely put down. The course of this chapter then touches on his apostolic place, and at the same time his refusal to use the rights of it. Some people have gifts of wisdom and knowledge (8). They are a trust put into his hands, to profit withal; and the more he profits others with them, the more abundantly will they turn to his account in the end, Phil 4 17. This implies that if a gift cannot be shared, and shared for the good of others, it is not from the Spirit. of Besides there is this most important sense of the church never to be forgotten namely, that divine institution viewed as a whole on. Accordingly these Corinthian brethren had by little and little got on until some of them had fallen into intemperance on the occasion of the Eucharist; not, of course, simply by the wine drank at the table of the Lord, but through the feast that accompanied it. There are those who say, "We are this, we are that, we are not part of the whole body," they don't see it. There can be no such thing as isolation in the Church. shazam . ( 1 Corinthians 12:16 ). They had to be careful that they were not deceived as they were earlier by the fraudulent priests speaking through the idols. b. Rather, they are all dependent upon the spirit in their ability to confess Christ as Lord as well as in the variety of gifts that they bring to the community. The Pentecost lectionary takes place in Jerusalem on the feast day of Shavuot, fifty days after Passover in the Jewish calendar. The next step, after denying resurrection for the Christian, would be to deny it about Christ. Now the apostle tells them none could act under the influence, nor by the power, of the Spirit of God, who disowned and blasphemed Christ: for the Spirit of God bore uncontrollable witness to Christ by prophecy, miracles, his resurrection from the dead, the success of his doctrine among men, and its effect upon them; and could never so far contradict itself as to declare him accursed. Prophesying never means preaching. "What you are is revealed by whom you follow and whom you worship" (Zodhiates 41). They themselves were not fit; they were but babes. Out of this fertile root of evil has the clergy grown. Were the whole ear, where were the smelling? a Dialog. It would seem that the sisters at Corinth gave them a deal of trouble, and that they had forgotten entirely their due relative place. Such was the spirit and the faith of the apostle. There is many a disciple who, far from knowing how vain idolatry is, thinks a good deal of the idol. (c) Whatever was true when Paul was writing, it is certainly true that later on, in the sore days of persecution, Christians were compelled either to curse Christ or to die. He was free to serve Christ, and time was short: what had such an one to do with heathen temples? If the whole body were an eye [it would be weird], where would be the hearing? THE TESTING FIRE 1 Corinthians 3:12 - 1 Corinthians 3:13. It is always the danger of man that he is not content to believe; he would like first of all to understand. 3:12: But if any man buildeth on the foundation gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, stubble; The six items in this verse demonstrate different types of builders (or ministers, verse 6). the polished Greek believers no more than babes! The conduct they were under: Carried away to these dumb idols, even as you were led. But what if they cant? The apostle tells them he would not have them ignorant either of their original or use. And "therefore," as he closes with the practical deduction from it all, "my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work, of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.". They affected to think they might be pure in spirit, but do what they liked with their bodies. Sometimes congregations have never asked questions about their reason for being in this way. He shows them how they might discern those gifts that were from the Spirit of God, true spiritual gifts: No man, speaking by the Spirit, calls Jesus accursed. 19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? Verse-. The rest of the world were strangers to the covenant of promise, aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and in a manner without God, Ephesians 2:12. Giuliano gets yellow. Nor is there a member of the body of Christ but may and ought to be useful to his fellow-members, and at some times, and in some cases, is needful to them. "But [He] will, with the temptation, also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. All the members of the body are, in some respect, useful and necessary to each other: The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee; nor the head to the feet, I have no need of your: nay, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble (the bowels, etc.) They fully admitted his want of instruction, and refinement, and, so to speak, of spiritualization, if it only might be. II. Paul begins chapter 12 by saying, Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed (1 Corinthians 12:1).1. But they were not distributed for the mere honour and advantage of those who had them, but for the benefit of the church, to edify the body, and spread and advance the gospel. Miserable abjectness of mind! But here, in 1 Corinthians 12:4-13, he focuses on the spirit. This was the only right way to quiet and cement them, and make their gifts turn to the advantage and edification of the church. Healing diseases, relieving the poor, helping the sick, have their use: but how vain a thing is it to speak languages, if a man does it merely to amuse or boast himself! and who yet anathematized and cursed the name of Jesus. It was the word by which the sacred name Jehovah was rendered in the Greek translation of the Old Testament scriptures. We should be doing the duties of our own place, and not murmuring in ourselves, nor quarrelling with others, that we are not in theirs. Some at Corinth, still influenced by attitudes from former idolatrous days, were impressed by such things and considered those who so spoke to be spiritually superior. No man can confess this truth in the day of trial but by the Holy Ghost animating and encouraging him. But no amount of gift, in few or many, can of itself produce holy spiritual order. If everything were one member where would the body be? We learn a lot about the members of these early house churches. The outward rite is of divine institution, significant of the new birth, called therefore the washing of regeneration, Tit 3 5. Were such going before the Gentiles? Christianity deepens our estimate of every want. In this chapter the apostle, I. If persons were grounded in Christianity, he was prepared to go into the greatest depths of revealed truth; but then the power of entering safely was not human, but of the Holy Ghost. He himself could speak more tongues than they all. In the Church of Corinth the most amazing things were happening through the action of the Holy Spirit, but in an age of ecstasy and of enthusiasm there can be hysterical excitement and self-delusion as well as the real thing, and in this and the next two chapters Paul deals with true manifestations of the Spirit. Prophecy seemed to be somewhat despised amongst the Corinthians. The apostle here makes out the truth of what was above asserted, and puts the gifted men among the Corinthians in mind of their duty, by comparing the church of Christ to a human body. Their state was such, and God had so overruled it in His ways, that the apostle had received nothing from them. In chapters 12 and 14, Paul is addressing issues related to spiritual gifts, particularly the gift of speaking in tongues. (3) It is true that no man will ever cherish a proper regard for Jesus Christ, nor love his name and work, unless he is influenced by the Holy Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many ( 1 Corinthians 12:13-14 ). If we follow idols, we are of the idols; however, if we follow God, through obedience to the messages received from the Holy Spirit, we are of God.
