This year’s event is being hosted by the Town of Amherst, and is being held at town’s Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre. Section VII – Native Pest Issues
8:00 – 8:30 As a means of setting the stage for the Native Pest portion of the workshop, and discussions on the current spruce budworm outbreak, 3 short videos from CBC News archives covering the last two major spruce budworm outbreaks in Atlantic Canada will be viewed by the group:
- “Welcome to Budworm City” 1957. DDT Spray program for SBW from the 1950’s in northern NB and the Gaspe region of Quebec. (8 min 51 sec)
- “Seeking Alternatives to Pesticides” 1976. Discusses the research by CFS in Quebec to develop BT as an alternative to DDT for control of SBW; as well as research into the use of sex pheromones to disrupt SBW mating at UNB for trials in NL. (10 min 21 sec)
- “Cape Breton Recovers from the Spruce Budworm” 1989. Discusses the salvage operations in the CB Highlands after the last SBW outbreak, resulting “in the largest tree salvage operation of its kind in North America” after 95% mortality of the softwood. Also notes lessons learned and new silviculture practices to avoid similar results during the next epidemic. (2 min 23 sec)
