The smooth surface expected on most Rail-Trails isn't going to be found. Along the way back I thought I saw two black bears. There was a tree across the trail (which they will remove) that required some nifty maneuvering to get around since the trail is elevated at this point. The north end starts at living memorial park which has shaded parking. Although it's a short hike and the nearby business park is visible through the trees, it's still a great trail to view the Charles. Overall this is a good trail for bicycling, but off leash dogs and the stone dust trail badly hurt its rating. It's a good trail for kids too since there are some side trails that lead to the creek that you can walk down and explore (helps break things up for the younger ones). I started on the south end and the trail inclines from there at a moderate rate. The dirt trail is very dusty and it gets into the gears and chain. I would recommend riding the trail in the morning.

If anyone has any advice please let me know, last time I took car out there I was greeted by military personnel. I remember riding for 15 miles before and the road was pretty smooth. The trail surface is paved rubber or deck (with railings) smooth, and typically at least 4 feet wide.
